European Oak and American Walnut with upholstered seats.
These chairs were made as part of a suite of 'Brunel' dining room furniture including tables and a display cabinet. The furniture was designed for a client whose father was a civil engineer. Remembering that childhood holidays usually included a visit to a 'special' bridge my client asked me if the furniture design could possibly reflect some engineering features. The joints between the back legs and the top rail of the chairs features a pinned joint typical of engineering and the fan arrangement of spindles in the back of the chair represents steel rods often seen in similar formations supporting suspension bridges.
