When St Hugh's College in Oxford were looking to commission a range of distinctive contemporary furniture for their fabulous new Dickson Poon China Studies Centre, they turned to Makers' Eye.
In this exciting and important commission we aimed to complement the subtle Oriental influence of the architecture in our Poon designs, bringing a pure, light feel to all the work.
The St Hugh's range was successful for us in winning both the national Wood Awards and a coveted Design Guild Mark.
This desk, 35 in total,was made in two sizes for the senior academic staff at Dickson Poon. Specifically, the design had to allow for the accommodation of either one or two filing cabinets, which we felt were best concealed as best possible.
This prompted us to design solid oak ends which feature the signature flared leg, in this case repeated to add visual interest to the design.
The other main requirement was for the tops to made from a durable, cleanable material for which we specified top quality genuine linoleum. This is arranged in removable panels, the dimensions of which reflect the size and positioning of the cabinets below.
