Bespoke Bed in cherry, maple & walnut 'saleem'

In timbers chosen to represent the contrasting colour tones of buildings in North Africa and the surrounding region.

The turned finials were shaped to avoid the look of a mosque’s traditional pinnacle.

The central arch of the headboard represents the roofs of North African and Eastern buildings, the ‘supporting’ pillars styled to evoke ancient Egyptian architecture.

The main panels of the headboard and footboard are purple stained maple, with inlaid metal ‘stars’ showing the Southern and Northern constellations.

This is to mimic a view to the night sky but also to acknowledge that all people are equal within the Universe.

The hand-carved walnut panels and cherry, maple & walnut parquetry panels are intended to represent Zillij tilework and pierced screens typical of the region and to pay homage to the skill of the tile workers.

The gold painted Arabic word is ‘Salaam’ ~ used in greeting, but literally meaning ‘Peace’.

Cherry with maple and black walnut ~ clear finish other than central panels of headboard and footboard, which are both colour-stained purple Inlaid with brass and aluminium
